Monday 3rd December 2007
Quite a quiet night in the pub, with seven of us in this week ....
Players:
Darren, Gordon, Mark L, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Sue
Games Played:
The first in decided to play a few rounds of this fun game until others turned up.
Mark: (8 +
0) 8
Sue: (5 + 3) 8
Rachel: (6 +
6) 12
Darren: (18 + 2) 20
Nick: (0 + 22) 22
A good shared win for Sue and Mark. I'm normally terrible at this one, but I somehow managed to win the first round. However, foolish use of the "open hand" option in the second round left me with a handful of other people's pieces!
There were now seven of us, and so we split into two groups. This was the choice of four of us ...
Gordon:
96
Darren: 95
Neil: 86
Nick: 75
This was a very good game, which was new to everyone apart from me (I went easy on them). A very close fight between Darren and Gordon, with Neil relying on Buddhas to gain a load of points at the end, but still falling a little short. I seemed to suffer a little from going for a similar strategy to Darren, but being behind him in turn order, which meant I kept having to pay to carry on trying to do what I wanted!
And the other three were off making rum and cigars ....
Mark:
78
Rachel: 75
Sue: 69
This game seemed to fall flat with the three players involved, with all of them getting to the end with a bit of a "Is that it?" feeling. Interesting, as Sue had played and enjoyed the game before ....
Meanwhile, the other four had finished their game of In the Year of the Dragon, and decided to have a quick game while waiting ....
Nick:
73
Gordon: 62
Neil: 56
Darren: 50
This game definitely rewards getting big groups of caravans - The fish points are a bonus, but definitely not a game-winner. Luckily, I had accidentally set myself up to get a large group at the end of the game, although I was a bit fortunate when a couple of people passed and let me in!
We changed the groups and played another couple of games ...
Gordon:
4
Mark: 2
Neil: 2
Nick: 1
This is a fun little card game - Kind of like a simplified Condottiere or Iliad, but with action cards that can really mess with your opponents! A lot of fun ... and a fairly comfortable win for Gordon!
And the other three went off to Kingsburg ...
Rachel:
40
Sue: 37
Darren: 34
I don't know much about this one .... but all three seemed to enjoy the game. A nice win for Rachel.
Ivanhoe was a lot quicker than Kingsburg, which gave the remaining three of us a chance to play this fun little game, after Gordon had to leave us.
Mark:
69 (11)
Nick:
69 (10)
Neil: 68
This was incredibly close. Once we started to add the points for coal and gold, all of the scores completely tightened up! In the end, Mark and I tied one point ahead of Neil (who had actually got his 14 cowboys on the board and triggered the end of the game). We looked up the tiebreaker, which turns out to be "most cowboys on the board", and Mark beat me by a single guy. Had Neil got one more point, he'd have gone from last to first!
And finally ....
Darren:
6
Neil: 6
Rachel: 6
Mark: 4
Sue: 4
Nick: 2
Saboteur is always fun, but this seemed to be an especially funny game of this great end-of-nighter. We played four rounds, but still had a three-way tie at the end!
And that brought us to closing time. Thanks to those who came along, and we'll see you next week.
