How to find Shire Games

Monday 1st October 2007

A very quiet night in the pub, with just five of us in by the end of the evening ...

Players:

David F-F, Mark L, Nick, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

Masons

Sue and I had just set this one up as Rich arrived, so the three of us had a game ....

Rich:    130
Nick:    113
Sue:    98

This is always a great little game, all about managing the hand you've been given. Rich shot off to a pretty big lead about halfway through the game as we started to get the "one big city" happening. But then as a few smaller cities appeared, both Sue and I (almost) caught him up, before he managed to stretch away once more as the palaces finally ran out.

Die Säulen von Venedig

We were now up to four players, and Sue decided that we hadn't played this one recently enough ....

Nick:    67
Rich:    64
Sue:    51
David:    50

Every time I play this game, I remember how much I enjoy it. I think it needs at least four people, but I love the way the card passing works, and how much you have to help other people if you want to do well yourself. David got off to a flying start, thanks to his Gondolier, and at one point it looked like a three-way battle for second. However, thanks to the three of us ganging up a little and helping each other with some buildings, we slowly made some ground and started to close the gap. Luckily, David couldn't find the last Pitch Dipper card he needed to end the game. Rich and I were in a share of the lead when I managed to build a tile which put me a couple of points ahead, just before becoming the start player and ending the game before he could catch me!

Blokus

Mark was on his way, and so we grabbed this quickie to fill the time ....

David:    -7
Nick:    -12
Rich:    -15
Sue:    -22

This is a game that we hadn't played for a long time, and it was really nice to have another go. I felt like I was struggling from about the fourth turn, after David played a rather mean blocking piece and messed up my plan, and yet I'd managed to get most of my larger pieces in early. I retired in the same round as Sue did, and then Rich followed us a couple of turns later, while David survived for another turn or two after that.

Beowulf - The Legend

We were now up to five players, and this game had been requested by Rich ....

David:    (23 - 0)    23
Nick:    (21 - 0)    21
Rich:    (23 - 2)    21
Sue:    (22 - 2)    20
Mark:    (26 - 2 - 15)    9

Nobody quite realised how close this game was until it came to adding up the scores. Mark had terrible luck with the risks, building up scratches faster than he could get rid of them. Mark would have been fine if he'd managed to win the final battle and heal a wound, but Rich pipped him to first place thanks to a tie-breaker. David and Sue only had one wound apiece, while Rich and I were both one small scratch away from a big minus fifteen!

Dancing Dice

And we only had 15 minutes left after that one, so guess what we just about had time for ...

David:    6 Stamina left
Rich:    Last to drop
Nick:    Amazed he lasted this long
Sue:    2nd to fall
Mark:    First to drop

This was fun and silly as always, and for a change I wasn't the first to fall away, thanks to some lucky dice. David won this one with ease, as we all struggled for the places, he was consistently rolling the right combo's.

And that was all we had time for. See you all again next week!
