How to find Shire Games

Thursday 30th August 2007

About 14 of us in tonight (I lost count) ....

Players:

Darren, James R, Jon, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Mike, Neil, Nick, Phil, Philippa, Rachel, Rich, Susan, Tim

Games Played:

Dancing Dice

The first three in grabbed our new "opener of choice" .... although that is a matter open for debate!

Susan:    3 Lives Left
Nick:    2nd to drop
Mark L:    First to drop.

A comfortable win for Susan at her first attempt at this fun dice game.

Condottiere

All of a sudden we were up to quite a lot of people, and so we split into two large groups.

Mark L:    5
Darren:    3
Mel:    1
Susan:    1
Nick:    0

I couldn't even win a single battle! Mark played a good - and risky - game, at one point choosing a region that could have given Darren the game. It worked for him, however, as we all fought to stop Darren, and then Mark walked into the next region (almost) unopposed. I think I could have won one battle right near the end, but - for no obvious reason - kept a couple of cards back.

Ruse & Bruise

And the other six went upstairs with this new game of Mike's ...

Rachel:    33
Philippa:    32
Mike:    24
Phil:    20
James:    18
Jon:    3

Don't know a whole lot about this one. It looks like it was a very tight fight between the two girls, while Jon was obviously thinking of other things. I mean ... how do you actually only score three??

Thebes

We now split into three groups. Four went off digging .....

(Artifacts + Exhibitions + Congress + Knowledge)

Darren:    (24 + 0 + 28 + 10)    62
Rachel:    (50 + 0 + 0 + 0)    50
Susan:    (34 + 0 + 1 + 10)    45
Mike:    (35 + 0 + 1 + 5)    41

Darren's 28 points from Congress cards seemed to make this one a bit of a foregone conclusion, although - apparently - they all seemed to come out while he was wandering around Europe by himself, and the others were all tired and worn out after some very long digs. So I've been told.

Saint Petersburg

Four others went off to Russia ....

Mark L:    74
Nick:    70
Mel:    68
Rich:    66

This was a pretty tight game, although it is very tough for new players to know what to do the first time they play. I was miles behind all the game, although amassing a good collection of Aristocrats. Eventually though, I was just a little too far back to make a challenge to Mark, who got a handy last extra pink guy at the death.

Rum & Pirates

And the other five went off to fight for sleeping quarters ...

Jon:    40
Neil:    36
Phil:    34
Philippa:    29
James:    21

A shortened game, with only three of five days played, Jon managed to find the best dice (and pubs, treasure, etc..) for a narrow victory.

Dancing Dice (2)

A few departed, we mixed up the groups, and this silly game appeared again

Rich:    7 (!) lives left
Mark L:    Last to drop
Mark P:    3rd
Darren:    4th
Susan:    5th
Rachel:    First to drop.

This was a pretty comprehensive victory, as - until tonight - we'd never even seen a game end with someone having three lives left, let alone seven!

Factory Fun

The numbers dropped to nine, and we split again to finish the evening off ....

Nick:    73
Neil:    53
Mel:    47
Phil:    28

This was a first play for all but Neil, although I think I got lucky with some of the machines that came up. I had very few pipes in my factory, and a total of 40 bonus cash at the end of the game, which was enough to keep me nicely out in front. A game which I enjoyed, but one which people will either love or hate ....

Plague & Pestilence

And finally, the downstairs group of five played this fun little "take that" game ...

Darren:    10 PP remaining
Mark P:    Last to die
Rachel:    3rd
Susan:    4th
Mark L:    First to die.

I don't know much about this one, although having 10 population left at the end sounds like it was pretty close. The last three players all went out at roughly the same time, with only Mark taking an obviously early bath!

And that was that for another week. Thanks for coming, and see you all soon.
