Thursday 27th September 2007
A busy night in the shop this week .... And I managed to spend almost all of it upstairs, so there are a fair number of games that I know nothing about, apart from the scores (so what's new, I hear you ask) ....
Players:
Annelies, Cornel, Darren, Dave C, Dave F, Gordon, James, Jonathan, Mark L, Mark P, Mike, Nick, Phil, Rachel, Roj, Sue
Games Played:
A lot of early arrivals this week, and even before Sue and I were ready to go, a game of Nottingham broke out ....
James:
64
Dave F: 61
Roj: 58
Phil: 50
Cornel: 31
Mike: 29
Annelies: 26
And this is the first game I know nothing about. Looks like it was a bit of a four-way battle, with a big gap between 4th and 5th place. A pretty good score for James, though in a seven player game!
In fact, there were nine early arrivals ... But the other two went off to try and recreate England's poor performances in the Rugby World Cup ...
Gordon:
(New Zealand) 7
Mark L:
(England)
0
A full 80 minutes brought a low final score, with New Zealand edging out the English thanks to a try right under the posts.
There were now five more standing around, and so we decided on this fun and quick auction (and area control) game ...
(Carpets + Oases + Horses + Ovoos)
Jonathan:
(0 + 4 + 119 + 6) 129
Nick: (26 + 0
+ 0 + 60) 86
Darren: (42 + 33 + 3 + 0) 78
Rachel: (4 + 24 + 7 + 28) 63
Dave C: (14 + 33 + 10 +
0) 57
A pretty impressive victory here for Jonathan, whose seven horses had a huge 17 Savannah tiles to graze on, putting him miles ahead of the rest. Rachel and I had the lead at the halfway stage (we thought), as we were both collecting rock and ovoos like crazy, but all of a sudden they seemed to dry up, and Jonathan's grassland just kept getting bigger and bigger ....
The rugby had finished , and the two loose players found a quickie to keep them going ....
Gordon:
Winner
Mark
L: Not the winner.
This one I know nothing about. Not a thing. To be honest, I can't even remember how you play it!
The groups all swapped around a little now, and a few more games got underway. This one had been requested by Phil ...
Sue:
150
Cornel: 119
Annelies: 104
Phil: 76
That's what happens when you request a game ... everyone picks on you and puts you in dead last! Actually, I'm not sure how this game went, but it looks like Sue had the whole thing under control (despite getting no long routes ... so she says!)
And four more guys went exploring the caves ....
Dave
F: 14
James: 10 (40)
Roj: 10 (25)
Mike: Dead.
I should have asked what these scores meant. It seems that Dave won it, while James and Roj tied for second. However, I don't know what the number in brackets is! Mike is listed as "dead", so I think we can assume he came in last place.
The Oasis crowd managed to finish their games while everyone else was busy. So they all went fishing instead.
Darren:
62
Nick: 61
Dave C: 59
Jonathan: 56
Rachel: 46
This was a very tight game, with everyone progressing round the scoring track at much the same rate. As the game neared the end, Darren decided to end it by doing something weird without working out if it was definitely in his interest to do so: He sold four fish to a full market, earning a bundle of cash but filling up the garbage pile, losing him a (slightly smaller) bundle of cash. This also caused Jonathan and I to lose some cash as well, although I gained some back for having a big pile of worms! When the dust had settled, it turned out that Darren had done exactly tthe right thing, grabbing the victory by a single point, in a very close finish!
The groups shuffled around a little more downstairs, and four people took a trip to Italy ...
Gordon:
9
Rachel: 8 (6 in Vesuvius)
Dave C: 8 (8 in Vesuvius)
Sue: 8 (12)
Again, I know nothing about this one.
For a game which is always pretty close, this seems even closer than usual! Sue
looks like she attracted a lot of attention, with a massive 12 people in the
volcano.
The first of the longer games began
downstairs with this excellent railroad canal building game ...
Mike:
85
Mark L: 68
Phil: 63
Cornel: 62
Annalies:
56
This looks like it was always a fight for the places, with Mike winning by a margin greater than that which covered the next four places.
And upstairs, the other "biggie" was underway ....
James:
94
Nick: 88
Roj: 85
Dave F: 68
Darren: 64
This was an excellent game, with none of us really sure who had control of it. James went for cash from his Capital buildings, while I went for cash from the Trade Goods and Merchant Ships. Roj was sailing Missionaries over to the New World faster than you could say "convert", while Dave was the aggressive one, shooting people whenever he felt like it. Darren had a whole bunch of captains, but it turned out to be almost too many, as he had more people keen on going discovering than he could possibly use. Enjoyed by all involved, this was a really fun game.
A few people had to go, which left a little group of three that weren't involved in the longer games ...
Rachel:
9
Mark P: 3
Sue: 2
Rachel managed to win this one by quite some margin! The cheers and groans could be heard pretty clearly upstairs ...
The last game of the night was another quickie for the three remaining players ....
Rachel:
19
Mark P: 14
Sue: 12
In a repeat result to the previous game, Rachel managed to win the final game of the evening.
And that was the lot for a pretty busy Thursday. Thanks to everyone who came along.
