How to find Shire Games

Monday 23rd July 2007

"Back to normal" numbers-wise this week, with eleven of us piling into the pub for beer and games ...

Players:

Bal, Charli, Claire, David F-F, Faye, Mark L, Neil C, Nick, Rich, Sue, Will

Games Played:

If Wishes were Fishes

We were quickly up to five players, and we thought we'd give this fun little game a try, having only played it with three before ...

Rich:    80
Charli:    61
Mark:    58
Nick:    58
Sue:    54

This was loads of fun, and far trickier with five than it is with three! For a start, the fish cards are likely to be completely different when it comes round to your turn, making it tricky to plan too far ahead. Rich slowly edged away from the rest of us, and grabbing one of the worm bonuses took him well clear. The game very nearly ended with the garbage pile filling up (mainly with my fish - which would have put me comfortably last!), but I managed to persuade Charli to sell her fish somewhere else instead, boosting her up to second and keeping me out of "the red"!

Ra

While we were busy fishing, five others had arrived and grabbed this old favourite:

David:    35
Will:    29
Neil:    29
Bal:    22
Claire:    18

I don't know a whole lot about this one, despite it happening about a foot away from me! It was a pretty rowdy game, and it looks like David taught the others just well enough to allow him to win the game! Although, to be fair, if he grabbed the +5 Sun bonus at the end, it was much closer than it looks!

Dragon's Gold

The fishermen decided to try this little negotiation game while we were waiting for the Ra game to finish up ...

(Silver + Gold + Red + Majorities + Black)

Nick:    (7 + 9 + 6 + 12 + 7)    41
Charli:    (14 + 9 + 1 + 12 + 0)    36
Rich:    (4 + 18 + 2 + 12 + 0)    36
Mark:    (4 + 15 + 2 + 12 + 0)    33
Sue:    (7 + 9 + 4 + 12 + 0)    32

This was actually a pretty tight game when you look at the scores, with nine points separating first from last! My black diamond (which I'd managed to pick up on the very first round) was pretty much the difference between winning and losing. It was interesting that we all went for one majority each, although not consciously, as hardly anything was traded during the half-time market phase!

Ticket to Ride: Europe

We were now down to seven players, so we split into a three and a four. This was the choice of the gang of three ....

David:    105
Will:    102
Claire:    101

Look how close the scores were in this one! I don't know much about the game, although I believe that Claire easily won the longest train bonus, putting her in contention until Will counted his tickets and pipped her by a single point. David then checked his, and with a tiny 5-point ticket as his last one, jumped from third to first place and grabbed the win!

Thebes

This great new game made its second consecutive Shire Gamers appearance ....

(Artifacts + Exhibitions + Congress + Knowledge)

Sue:    (50 + 5 + 0 + 8)    63
Nick:    (38 + 4 + 1 + 13)    56
Neil:    (17 + 0 + 15 + 5)    37
Rich:    (29 + 0 + 3 + 3)    35

This one really is a fun game. There's a huge dollop of luck in the game, depending on how successful you are at digging, but the game itself is so much fun anyway that nobody seems to mind! Sue got some pretty good digs in, spending more time digging than the rest of us. Rich spent a lot of time acquiring shovels, assistants, and different modes of transport, but when it came to excavating he was a little short on local knowledge. Neil was after the congress cards, but luckily they got removed from play a couple of times, stopping him seeing more than five of them. In the end, none of us could compete with the treasures that Sue had uncovered, giving her a well-deserved victory.

Saboteur

And finally the remaining seven of us (although a slightly different seven) went underground ...

Neil:    10
Faye:    7
Nick:    6
David:    4
Sue:    3
Will:    3
Claire:    2

A great laugh as always. The honest dwarves managed to find the gold three times, which helped Neil and I, as we were both on the side of the good guys in all three rounds. Sadly, I had my tools broken in one of the rounds, which meant no one would share any gold with me. Neil on the other hand got his mitts on three helpings of gold, even connecting himself for the first one.

And that was all we had time for. Thanks to those who came along, especially the new guys - It's always nice to see new people at the pub!
