How to find Shire Games

Thursday 12th July 2007

Eleven gamers managed to find their way to the shop this week ....

Players:

Andy, Darren, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Mike, Neil H, Nick, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Drakon

This one is starting to become a bit of a regular at the games nights. A great opener, and perfect when there's 6 of you hanging around.

Mark L:    10
Sue:    8
Nick:    6
Roj:    6
Darren:    4
Mike:    3

This was a load of fun, as always, although it went on a little longer than expected (which is quite common with this game, as we all play as nastily as possible! The first people with coins were immediately targeted by Drakon herself, and it eventually got to the point where we'd used all of the tiles, and most of the coins room were impossible to reach. As we all started relying on stealing from others, Mark pulled out a "floating room" tile and drifted over to a treasure room to claim the win. A great game!

Settlers of Catan

We were now up to nine players, which gave us a neat split. This was the choice of the gang of four ...

Mike:    10
Mark L:    9
Darren:    7
Sue:    7

All I know about this game is that Mark was going to win on the next turn (according to Mark, obviously!). Mike was the only player to have not played this game before, so they obviously taught him a little too well!

Hermagor

Meanwhile downstairs, the group of five tackled this excellent trading and travelling game ...

Andy:    $144
Roj:    $136
Mel:    $130
Nick:    $118
Neil:    $72

These scores pretty much reflect how successful we all were at the market. Neil seemed to regularly get done out of the tiles he was after, although going first twice certainly didn't help him there! I had a couple of good days at the market, and a couple of very bad ones, one of those coupled with some extremely bad planning which took me out of the equation. In the count at the end, it felt like it was always going to be close between Roj and Andy, and Andy's many production buildings helped him take it by a meager $8, despite Roj gaining $5 for the main road at the end of the game.

Zooloretto

We were now up to eleven players, and so groups of five and six were formed. This was the five ...

Neil:    34
Andy:    25
Mike:    25
Mark L:    23
Tim:    23

Again, not much is known about this game, although I had heard that Neil had wiped the floor with the lot of them, and the scores seem to confirm that. Mark was trying out a 2 animal strategy (Monkeys and Flamingoes, I believe), which seems not to be such a good idea!

Gloria Mundi

The game of Mykerinos was over, and - staying with the Egyptian theme - it was time for an old favourite to make an appearance ...

Mark P:    Made it to Carthage
Nick:    6 steps behind
Sue:    11 steps behind
Mel:    13 steps behind
Darren:    17 steps behind
Roj:    23 steps behind

This was a very interesting game of Gloria - a game that we really should play more often! At the start of the game, a lot of expensive buildings appeared, which meant none of us could really get going. We all started to creep away from Rome as the cheaper stuff came along, and soon Darren was running away, with Sue in hot pursuit. As Roj began to get left a little behind, Mark and I started to catch Darren, and eventually managed to catch Sue. Sadly, we were both moving at a similar pace thanks to our farm buildings, so I could never close the game between Mark and myself. We were all down to one card and the Goth was a few steps from Rome as Mark triggered the final farming round that saw him safely to Carthage.

The Penguin Ultimatum

The four remaining Zooloretto players decided to stick with the animal theme and play this one.

Neil:    58
Mark L:    54
Andy:    51
Tim:    49

Not only do I not know much about this game, but I haven't the faintest idea what it's about or how you play it. I'm only assuming that the highest score wins the game!

Can't Stop!

And finally, the downstairs group dropped to four, and so we closed with another popular opener (if you're allowed to do that):

Nick:    3
Roj:    1
Mel:    0
Mark P:    0

I did start the game, which (apparently) gave me a huge advantage, although I didn't try and grab any columns in my first turn, which is always fun to try! Mel took the longest time to get going, and Mark suffered from some poor first rolls. Always a lot of fun, we like dice games at Shire Gamers!

And that was all we managed to get in this week. Thanks to all for coming along, and we'll see you next week.
