How to find Shire Games

Thursday 9th August 2007

A rather crowded 15 in the shop this week. With less and less space available (thanks to The Cast are Dice taking up more and more space), it was a "cozy" night ...

Players:

Andy, Darren, Dave F,  Julian, Lesley, Louise, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Neil H, Nick, Rachel, Stewart, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Lord of the Rings

The first four in had a quick go at this fun little push-yer-luck game ...

Dave
Nick
Stewart
Sue

This is a bit embarrassing, really. We all actually became corrupt and died before anyone had managed to destroy the ring. However ... while skimming the rules, I missed the bit about keeping the tiles you'd defeated, as the tie-breaker in this situation is who had defeated the highest number of tiles. It could welkl have been Stewart (it certainly wasn't Sue!), but we can't be sure ....

Foppen

This was played upstairs by the next bunch to arrive ....

Rachel:    (10 + 10 - 7)    13
Louise:    (10 + 10 - 12)    8
Julian:    (- 1 - 2 - 4)    -7
Darren:    (- 3 - 9 + 0)    -12
Andy:    (- 2 - 4 - 21)    -27

I know absolutely nothing about this one. Not a thing. Andy obviously did very badly, though ... that seems worth a mention.

Downfall of Pompeii

Suddenly, there were a load of people in. Four of them went off to Italy ....

Tim:    10
Rachel:    9 (7 in the volcano)
Dave:    9 (8 in the volcano)
Mel:    8

This looked like a lot of fun, but then it nearly always is! Tim had by far the most guys in the city (and he and Mel had 11 in the volcano), but managed not to try and get them all out, concentrating on just enough of them!

Saint Petersburg

Another four were off to Russia ....

Mark L:    95
Darren:    84
Andy:    69
Stewart:    57

I don't know a lot about this one, although I did hear Stewart claim he was doomed about half way through, which leads me to believe he ran out of cash. Never a smart thing to do in this one!

Ticket to Ride

And the other four people were off upstairs playing trains ....

Sue:    99
Lesley:    98
Julian:    96
Louise:    83

I know very little about this one as well (I seem to have not been paying much attention tonight!). Lesley claimed the longest train, which made for a very tight finish. Louise was ahead most of the way through the game, but didn't have the completed tickets to hang on.

Sitting Ducks Gallery

The upstairs group of six saw how much fun we were having, and pulled out their own Drakon set!

Tim:    Last Duck standing.
Mel:    Last to die
Rachel:
Dave:
Neil:    First to Die

And Tim made it two out of two with some clever fiddling around with the shooting gallery. Neil's ducks were the first to bite the bullet, and it eventually came down to Mel and Tim, but Mel's shot went a little astray.

Circus Flohcati

The Saint Pete crowd decided to play this little filler .....

Stewart:    75
Mark L:    69
Andy:    62
Darren:    55

Nabbed from Andy's website:

Still waiting for the other Mark to arrive, so we could get in a game of Power Grid, Mark suggested this fun flea card game, which neither Stew nor I had played before.

This game went well for Stew, as he finished with 3 sets on the table, and 45 points in his hand at the end of the game, while Mark also finished with 3 sets down, but only 39 points in hand. I had just 2 sets down, but 42 points in hand, whilst Darren also had 2 sets down, but only 35 points in hand.

Lifeboat

We were down to 12 people, and so we split into two groups of 6.

Dave:    31    (Lady Lauren)
Neil:    26    (The Kid)
Stewart:    22    (Frenchy)
Tim:    20    (First Mate)
Mel:    0    (Sir Stephen)
Rachel:    0    (Captain)

This won the award for noisiest game of the night! Somehow, the Kid survived to the end - which is more than I managed when I was the Kid - but lady Lauren made the most of some Jewellery to claim the victory.

Power Grid

And the other six were off to the USA to supply some power ...

Sue:    14    (€40,000)
Nick:    14    (€6,000)
Andy:    14    (€5,000)
Mark P:    13    (€20,000)
Mark L:    13    (€9,000)
Darren:    9

This was a pretty tight game, with three of us battling for the win, and two more very close behind. Mark L suffered a little from a bad starting position, as we hemmed him in from all sides. His efforts at getting out and blocking me in failed slightly, as Step 2 kicked in just at that moment! Sue, Andy and I all linked to four cities in the final round, but Sue had managed to save a little more cash than the pair of us. Andy and I had the fuel to power 15 cities, but neither of us could afford to link to one!

Trick or Treat

The other group of six played this fun little dice game ....

Stewart:    21
Neil:    20
Rachel:    19
Tim:    18
Mel:    17
Dave:    11

I don't know anything about this one, I'm afraid ... but by this time, this group of six were only playing games where you could pick on and upset each other ... so we have to assume that is what this was all about!

Citadels

And then five of them decided to assassinate and steal from each other ....

Dave:    35
Neil:    24
Rachel:    22
Mel:    17
Tim:    14

Looks like Dave was tuned in to everyone's wavelength for this one .... That's a fairly comfortable win!

Nottingham

And finally for the downstairs group .... a chance for some pilfering!

Darren:    60    (from 4 cards)
Nick:    60    (from 3 cards)
Mark L:    58
Sue:    57
Andy:    54
Mark P:    31

This was a fun end to the night. It took me ages to get going at all (although, to be fair, it took Mark P even longer!), but I managed - thanks to a couple of big missions - to climb up to losing in a tiebreaker for the second consecutive game! A good win for Darren, bouncing back from his dodgy performance in Power Grid!

And that was the end of a pretty busy evening ... Thanks all for coming!
