How to find Shire Games

Thursday 6th September 2007

A bunch of people in the shop again this week .... 15 to be precise.

Players:

Darren, Dave F, James H, James R, Jon, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Mike, Nick, Phil, Philippa, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Drakon

The first six in the shop did the usual thing of grabbing Drakon and going exploring ....

Mark L:    10
Darren:    4
Dave:    3
Nick:    3
Phil:    2
Mike:    1

This was another stingy game, which seems to be a habit when we play this one: All the coin cards stay in people's hands until they can be sure of playing them for their own benefit. Three people were in the lead for most of the game: Dave, Phil and Mike. So how Mark ended up winning it, nobody really knows. Five "2" coins gave him the win.

R-Eco

Four more arrived, and so the took this fun little card game upstairs ...

Sue:    10
James H:    8
Mel:    6
Roj:    2

Don't know much about this one at all. Lucky really, because it's so simple it would be hard to stretch a comment too far anyway. A fun little game, though.

TransEuropa

We were now up to 14 people, and split into three groups. This was the choice of the group that was waiting for someone else ....

Jon:    6
Philippa:    4
Mark L:    2
James R:    0
Mel:    0

Another game I know almost nothing about. I think it lasted for two rounds, with Mel  and James not troubling the scorers.

Die Händler

My new old game, and one I've been desperately trying to play with four players. Tonight we did.

Dave:    Ratsherr
Phil:    Oldermann    ($900)
Sue:    Oldermann    ($900)
Nick:    Oldermann    ($0)

This was a fun game, and again very close. I felt like I was struggling all the way through, but kept at the front end of the pack, which was a mistake as it seemed to make me a target. Phil and I didn't see an action card between us, as the other two used their Courier abilities to very good effect. Dave came from the back of the pack to the front with a huge amount of cash in the final round. And I know it's Guilders .... it's just Dollars are easier to type!

Caylus

And five guys were upstairs with this excellent game ....

Roj:    72
Darren:    69
Mike;    69
Tim:    58
James H:    51

This looks like it was a pretty close contest, with three players within three points. I wish I had more to tell you, but I Know nothing about what went on!

Ticket to Ride: Europe

The train gamers stuck with the theme .....

Jon:    129
Mark:    86
James R:    79
Mel:    51
Philippa:    29

Wow. I've never seen a set of scores this spread out in a game of Ticket to Ride. Then again, I don't play the European version as much as the original! I should know more about this one, as it was played on the table right next to ours, but I was too busy concentrating on coming last in something else!

Blokus

A few people disappeared, and so this fun little game was used to fill a gap in timing ...

James H:    -14
Roj:    -15
Tim:    -19
Darren:    -20

These high minus scores makes it look like this was a pretty cutthroat game!

Nottingham

Another shuffle of personnel, and five went off to Nottingham ...

Dave:    69
James H:    56
Mark P:    56
Roj:    55
Darren:    49

Another game I know nothing about. Looks like it was pretty close again, as a 20-point spread is not all that much really. Actually, it is ... I'm just trying to make Darren feel better.

Princes of Florence

And for the last two games, another quick shuffle round with the last eight of us ....

Nick:    81    ($1500)
Mark L:    81    ($200)
Sue:    71
Jon:    60

This was an interesting game, as we added in the new characters from the latest version. This makes the game quite a bit longer, as well as giving you lots more to think about. I really liked the new characters, because I won they seem to balance the game out rather nicely, giving you ways to combat the "usual" winning strategies. For example (for those that know the game), Mark had four Jesters, which in the normal version is pretty much an automatic win. However, the Princess helped me several times, and I just managed to keep my nose in front. Admittedly, if Mark had switched the way he played his bonus cards in the final round, he's have beat me by a point, but I'm not complaining!

Vikings

And finally, the other four were Scandinavia-bound:

Mel:    52
Phil:    45
Dave:    37
Mark P:    31

Mel grabbed the win on this one thanks to some excess fish hanging around. Meanwhile Mark went down starvation alley, losing enough points to seal his last place!

And that took us until well after midnight, which was a bit of a late one really! Thanks all for coming and see you soon.
