How to find Shire Games

Monday 3rd September 2007

A half dozen gamers in the pub this week ....

Players:

David F-F, Gordon, Mark L, Neil C, Nick, Sue

Games Played:

Ingenious

The first four in played this quickie to see if anyone else was coming along ....

Mark:    13
Neil:    11
Nick:    10    (13)
Sue:    10    (10)

This is always a great little game, but - being used to the two-player version - I was surprised to see such high scores. Mark managed to finish five of his colours, earning five extra turns which he used effectively to block the rest of us off! Neil was always closest to Mark, and only lost his lead when he had an obvious move to make him almost uncatchable, but sadly had none of the right colour at the vital moment! Sue and I had a close battle for last ....

R-Eco

We were now up to 5 players, but decided to hang on a little longer. Time for another fun filler ....

Neil:    (16 - 3)    13
Mark:    (10 + 2)    12
Nick:    (2 + 2)    4
Gordon:    (0 + 2)    2
Sue:    (2 - 1)    1

This is a simple, clever and fun card game. No one is really sure who is doing well until right near the end of the game, although the scores above may make you think differently! I don't think any of us have played enough to pay attention what we're leaving for the next person, but that could be the key to doing well in this one.

Pecunia non Olet

"The poo game" returns .....

Sue:    23
Gordon:    11
Neil:    11
David:    10
Nick:    9
Mark:    8

A good win for Sue in this one.  mark had a terrible deal full of very heavy people, and it kind of went downhill from there for him. I had a pretty strong deal, and quickly became the subject of everyone's bad cards! The money slowly ticked up for all of us, and luckily for Sue we all saw her win coming, but no one had the cards to do anything about it. My fourth place looks worse than it was, as - if Sue hadn't won that turn, I was earning 12 to give me the win on the very next turn (honest). A really fun game, packed with toilet humour. Just right for the pub! I promise to get some of these in stock ....

Before the Wind

We finally decided six was as many as we were getting, and so we split into two groups of three ....

Mark:    55
Sue:    41
Neil:    38

This was a game that we had been dying to try with the full four players, but sadly the numbers weren't right tonight. It was Mark's second playing with three, but Neil had previously only ever played two-player games before. It was Sue's first game. Apart from that, I don't know a whole lot about it!

Die Händler

This was the choice of the other three ....

Gordon:    Ratsherr    ($4500)
Nick:    Ratsherr    ($3000)
David:    Oldermann

This is the other game that I am desperate to play with the full four players, and sadly I am still waiting to do so! I enjoy it a lot with three, and four is supposedly a whole lot better, so I can hardly wait! Gordon had the card-gathering powers with his Courier movement, and made pretty good use of them. I actually managed to get myself an action card in this game (it was my first one in three games), so that was a minor achievement for me! David made a slight mistake early on by letting a Wagon overtake the one he desperately wanted to get home, which cost him a little bonus money. David finished a social level behind Gordon and I, as he was limited to promoting by two levels each turn. The game was very different to the previous ones I'd played, as we basically only used two or three cities, and had everything going in or out of them, with some cities not seeing any action for the whole game. A great game, enjoyed by all, especially Gordon!

Bang!

And to finish off, five of us went to the Wild West .....

Neil:    Winner    (Sheriff)
Mark:    Winner    (Deputy)
S
ue:    Last to die    (Renegade) - killed by Mark
David:    2nd to die    (Outlaw) - killed by Sue's dynamite
Nick:    First to die    (Outlaw) - killed by Mark

As usual, this was a load of fun, despite me dying pretty early in a hail of bullets. I had David pegged as my partner in crime quite early on, which made it very disappointing when he later challenged me to a duel, and - foolishly - neither of us would cave in until we'd both emptied our hands of very important cards. Pretty soon the outlaws were dead, and all Neil had to do was figure out which of Sue and Mark was his Deputy. Sue became the next target, and Mark soon finished her off to give the good guys the victory.

And that brought us to closing time. Thanks to all who came along.
