How to find Shire Games

Monday 2nd July 2007

Just the six of us in the pub this week. Two benefits of a smaller number: We could all stay together, and there are less games to write up!

Players:

David F-F, Gordon, Mark L, Nick, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

Fiji

The first three in thought we'd have a go at this fun and slightly random bidding game ....

Mark:    10
Sue:    6
Rich:    5
Nick:    3

This always feels like one of those games where you can spend some time planning, only to see it all go horribly wrong, and then you wonder if you'd be better just guessing. However, it's always a fun game at the same time. Mark was actually on 9 shrunken heads after three round, but Sue stopped him getting a maximum score by winning the final round. I was doing ok after the first two rounds, but didn't pick up a single reward in the second half of the game.

Nottingham

We were now up to six players, but decided to stick with something shorter in case we were getting any more in ...

Rich:    60
Gordon:    51
Sue:    48
Mark:    43
Nick:    42
David:    25

This game is always good fun. Rich managed to get his 60 points by going for three of the special missions, while Gordon was hot on his trail by trading in sets, and not taking a single special card. David spent an age with a huge hand of cards, trying to get the "four pairs", but it ultimately cost him in how many extra cards he missed out on.

Power Grid

We decided that six was our number for this week, and chose to spend the rest of the evening playing this classic game of resource management ....

Rich:    15
Mark:    14
David:    12 (€141,000)
Sue:    12 (€133,000)
Gordon:    12 (€130,000)
Nick:    12 (€119,000)

As expected, this was a great game. Rich actually spent a fair chunk of the game in the lead, which was penalising him in how much he was buying resources for, but he still had the cash to end the game one round before most of us wanted it to by connecting his last few cities. Mark tried to match his 15 cities, but could only afford to connect 14 in a pretty busy East Coast. David and I were sharing the West Coast, but the cost of connections was too dear in the end.

Guillotine

Gordon had to leave us, and so the remaining five decided to spend the last half an hour chopping the heads off the French nobility.

Sue:    21
David:    18
Rich:    16
Mark:    13
Nick:    13

The usual silly fun ensued. Mark and I picked on each other a little too much, taking us both out of the running. Sue was quietly collecting points, and eventually grabbed a pretty comfortable victory.

And that was the lot for this week. Thanks to those who came along, and we'll see you all next week.
