How to find Shire Games

Thursday 31st May 2007

A pretty miserable night out tonight, and just the seven of us staying warm and playing games ...

Players:

Andy, Darren, Dave F-F, Mark L, Nick, Rachel, Sue

Games Played:

Boomtown

At the start of the evening, Mark mentioned that we hadn't played this fun little auction game for a while, so as soon as there were five of us .....

(Mines + Mayors + Cash)

Mark:    (31 + 5 + 52)    88
Nick:    (34 + 0 + 32)    66
Darren:    (32 + 10 + 18)    60
Rachel:    (38 + 10 + 4)    52
Andy:    (29 + 0 + 8)    37

This was a lot of fun, as always, although Mark did his usual trick of being incredibly lucky with the dice! I think there may have been one or two rounds where his mines didn't produce a handful of gold, but in those rounds his bar (complete with dancing girls) made up for the loss. The ability to change the dice in the final round (to a number where only Mark earned income) took his score miles ahead of the rest of us!

Around the World in 80 Days

There was six of us in now, and looking around, there wasn't a great range of six player games in people's bags. However .... luckily, we found this great game (for the second time this month) ...

Nick:    70 Days
Rachel:    79 Days
Andy:    79 Days (but a little later than Rachel!)
Darren:    82 days
Mark:    Stuck in New York after 57 days
Sue:    Stuck in San Francisco after 58 Days

I think Mark probably would have beaten my time of 70 days, but sadly he lingered a little too long in the far east, and suddenly the time pressures were on as three players had got back to London. Darren was the fourth to arrive, doing so before Mark and Sue could pick up the cards they needed tom complete the journey. Everyone enjoyed this underrated game, as only Mark, Sue and I had played it before.

Caylus Magna Carta

We were now up to seven players, so we split into two little groups. This was the choice of the gang of three ....

(Castle + Buildings + Stuff)

Mark L:    (17 + 37 + 1)    55
Darren:    (27 + 20 + 5)    52
Sue:    (20 + 27 + 3)    50

A very close game, this one, looking at the scores. Mark didn't bother going to the castle as much as the other two, concentrating instead on the buildings on the road, where he earned the game winning points. Five points between first and last is a pretty close game!

Pillars of the Earth

This was the choice of the other four players ....

David:    43 (9 Gold)
Rachel:    43 (4 Gold)
Nick:    41
Andy:    34

Andy was the only one who hadn't played the game before, and Pillars seems to be one of those games where playing it once helps you know how much to pay for stuff. This was actually a very tight game, as shown by the fact that it went to a tiebreaker! Rachel and David were fighting over the metal, while I was employing as many sculptors as I could! In the last round, we got our 5th bad event (out of 6), which cost everyone a resource. Rachel then stole a stone from under my nose at the market! A great game, and a good win for David.

Portobello Market

The Caylus players had time to squeeze in a quick extra game while waiting for the Pillars players to be done ....

Darren:    137
Mark:    129
Sue:    124

I know absolutely nothing about this one, although it looked like another pretty close game, which seemed to be the theme for the evening!

Vikings

The two groups had a bit of a shuffle round, and this time the three players were off to Scandinavia ...

David:    66
Darren:    65
Andy:    51

Another very close game, and sadly that's about all I know of this one as well! You may think I wasn't paying much attention, but that's not the case. Honest.

Salamanca

And finally, the group of four downstairs went off to Spain (?) for some building of castles, farms and monasteries ...

Mark:    67
Rachel:    63
Nick:    59
Sue:    51

We hadn't played this one for a while, and it took us a little time to get back into it. The disaster tiles didn't get used as much as they had previously, as we kept getting greedy and taking extra land tiles, rather than using the cards to good effect. No one was absolutely sure who was ahead, especially as Rachel had earned a lot more in weekly income than the rest of us, but after counting all our cash Mark was the one who came out on top. No surprise there then :)

And that was all we had time for. Thanks to those who came along once again.
