How to find Shire Games

Thursday 21st June 2007

Back after a short break, we just managed to get into double figures tonight ....

Players:

Darren, Dave C, Mark L, Mark P, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Richard, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Gizeh

We quickly had six gamers in, and so we thought we'd start with a quickie to see if anyone else was coming ...

Mike:    11 (2 Treasures)
Sue:    11 (0)
Nick:    6 (6)
Darren:    6 (2)
Rachel:    4
Mark L:    0

This is a fun (and evil) little game, and one where no one managed to get exactly what they were looking for in their hand. Mark had a bit of a monopoly on the Scarabs, and so he was going round trying to stop everyone building. I think I had the most plus points, but - rather obviously - also managed to collect the most minuses as well! The tie breaker was treasure points, which Sue hadn't got at all, giving a well deserved win to Mike.

Yspahan

We were now up to eight players, which we split rather neatly (and quite quickly for us!) into two groups of four ...

Dave C:    78
Richard:    73
Nick:    68
Mike:    55

This one is always an excellent game, and it's a lot more tactical than you would first think (just try beating the computer opponents at it!). Mike had only played once before, and the game was new to Dave, but I fear Richard and I gave out a little too much advice, and Dave's timely building of the "extra points" building at the end of the second week was enough to keep him in front throughout the final few rounds. A close game, and one which was a lot of fun.

Canal Mania

The other group of four disappeared upstairs for a quick trip round England, in the second edition of this excellent game.

Mark L:    106
Darren:    93
Rachel:    89
Sue:    73

I know very little about this one, although it looks like Mark's practice at this newer version paid off. I think this will get a fair bit of play now that the second edition is out, and as soon as we all get the hang of how it plays, Mark's days will be numbered. Possibly.

Keythedral

As those two games ended, our numbers increased to 10 just in time to start two new ones. This was the choice of the downstairs gang.

(Cathedral + Cubes)

Sue:    (40 + 12)    52
Mark P:    (36 + 5)    41
Dave C:    (26 + 12)    38
Nick:    (30 + 7)    37
Rachel:    (34 + 2)    36

This is one that I hadn't played in a while, but whenever I do, I wish I played more often. It's a great game, which always appears to be nice and friendly at the start, and turns into a fight for land and resources by the end. Sue took advantage of a couple of very useful law cards during the game, gaining her some valuable gold cubes very cheaply. I was the victim of too many fences (although perhaps in hindsight I should have moved one of my houses), and was very lucky to pip Rachel out of last by a single point!

Age of Empires III

The upstairs crowd decided on this new one, making its third consecutive appearance ...

Mark L:    90
Richard:    87
Darren:    81
Tim:    67
Mike:    57

Again, I don't know a whole lot about this one, apart from what I overheard. It seems like Mark sent more soldiers to the New World than we normally see; Darren had a pretty good combination of buildings which made his Missionaries quite successful at converting the natives, only to have them shot by Mark's soldiers. Richard managed to score no points at all in the first two scoring, gaining all his points in the final tally, and almost having enough to pip Mark for the win at the end.

Pickomino

And finally, the downstairs group had a little time to kill at the end of the night, and pulled out this great little dice game:

Nick:    6
Rachel:    5
Mark P:    2
Sue:    0

This was a load of fun. There was some pretty terrible rolling going on, which meant that more worms were taken out of the game than usual. Mark criticized Sue for considering ending the game at one point just to make sure that she didn't finish last, and then he went and did exactly that! It was between Rachel and I, but sadly Rachel's four tiles only had a total of five worms on them, giving me the win by a single point!

And that was all we had time for. Not too many games, but all very enjoyable. Thanks all for coming out again.
