How to find Shire Games

Thursday 7th June 2007

Another packed evening in the shop with a dozen gamers in attendance ....

Players:

Andy, Claire, Dave F, Jen, Mark L, Mark P, Nick, Richard, Roj, Simon, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Drakon

The first four in decided on (what is supposed to be) a quickie to get us underway:

Nick:    10
Mark L:    8
Dave:    6
Roj:    5

This was a really fun game, involving almost every tile in the set as the game swung one way and the other, coins were lost and stolen, and the dungeon was torn apart on a regular basis. I managed to grab the final gold I needed, thanks mainly to a couple of useful exit tiles to get me out of some pretty sticky dead ends!

Gizeh

As the Drakon game went on a little longer than promised, the next four in nipped off for a quick game of pyramid building in Egypt ...

Tim:    22 (13 from treasures)
Andy:    22 (6 from treasures)
Sue:    21
Jen:    18

I know very little about this game (I was running round a dungeon at the time!), but this looks like it was rather friendly, compared to some games of Gizeh that we've played before. No one ended up with a big minus score, so I think there was a fair amount of working on your own stuff without destroying the work of others! A very close finish saw Tim take the win on a tie break from Andy, with Sue just a point behind.

Age of Empires III

All of a sudden there was eleven of us in the shop, and the decision was made (finally) to split into a 5 and a 6. This is the choice of the five ....

Roj:    80
Mark L:    77
Sue:    71
Dave:    67
Nick:    63

This was another excellent game of this new one ... one that's going to become a bit of a favourite in the future, I think. By the end of the game, Roj was making money hand over fist (and if that wasn't enough, we were also paying him some of ours!), which was enough to keep him in front, despite not being as well represented in the New World as the rest of us. Dave was the most aggressive, with several soldiers in America keeping Mark in check. I spent too much in the early rounds training my specialists, and therefore didn't invest in enough Capital buildings to keep me in the game.

Power Grid

And this is what the gang of 6 got up to ....

Claire:    15 Cities (€30,000)
Andy:    15 Cities (€7,000)
Richard:    14 Cities
Simon:    13 Cities (€20,000)
Tim:    13 Cities (€3,000)
Jen:    12 Cities

Another game that I don't know much about (I even forgot to ask which map they played on!). Another close result this evening, with Andy losing out on a tie-break for the second time tonight. Claire pulled off a good win in this one, with everyone pretty close behind.

Formula Motor Racing

We were now up to 12 players, and oddly chose to split into a 3, a 4 and a 5. This was the three-player option:

Claire:    33
Tim:    32
Jen:    13

I know absolutely nothing about this one (again!). I think there were several races played, looking at the scores, but all I have is the final result, which was a pretty close battle between Claire and Tim.

Vikings

The gang of four were off to Scandinavia (somewhere) to try and keep all their Vikings busy (and fed)

Dave:    64
Andy:    48
Roj:    37
Simon:    34

Dave went for the fishermen, which is how we've seen the last couple of game won. It seems that anyone claiming more than their fair share of little blue guys needs stopping, as not only are they earning a load of extra points, but everyone else is losing them!

Notre Dame

And finally, the final group of five went off to Paris for some Cathedral building ...

Mark L:    60
Richard:    58
Mark P:    53
Nick:    48
Sue:    44

Always a tricky little game full of agonising decisions, this was no exception as the cards were passed round the table. Mark was earning a load of points off his one building, while I had been forced into the park early, but the extra points weren't enough to keep me in the running. Mark and Richard helped themselves to a load of points in the Cathedral at the half-way stage, which took them away from the rest of us. We knew it was going to be close between those two, but eventually Richard just had one too many problems with the rats to keep up with Mark.

And that is that for a fortnight. Mondays are on as usual, but there is no Thursday meeting next week. Thanks all for coming along.
