How to find Shire Games

Monday 7th May 2007

Nine gamers down the pub this week .... Not bad for a Bank Holiday weekend!

Players:

David F-F, Faye, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Neil C, Nick, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

Formula Motor Racing

There were four of us in quite early this week, so we thought we'd have a race or two until some others turned up. As it turns out, we only had time for a single race:

Mel:    11 points
Nick:    6
Sue:    2
Mark P:    0 points

Always a fun little game this one, although it loses a little when you don't play a few races at once! Mel took the spoils by getting her two cars in 1st and 6th place, while Sue and I managed to get a single car in the points, with the other positions going to the neutrals!

No Thanks!

We were now up to 5, and so tried another quickie:

Nick:    (32 - 28)    4
Mel:    (28 - 4)    24
Mark P:    (38 - 11)    27
Rich:    (39 - 6)    33
Sue:    (78 - 6)    72

If there's one game I can win on a pretty regular basis, it's this one! We should play it more often .....

Ticket to Ride: Europe

With a few more arrivals, we were now up to nine players, and split into two groups. This was the choice of the four:

Mark L:    133
Sue:    123
Faye:    101
David:    99

This was a pretty tight game by the looks of it, with Mark grabbing a well deserved win from Sue. Faye took the longest train award, to drop David into last place.

Colosseum

Meanwhile, the group of five were off to Rome to put on some shows ....

Mel:    82
Nick:    80
Neil:    70
Mark P:    67
Rich:    64

This was a lot of fun, although it only just fit on the table! I was lagging behind the whole game, trying to build up to one big show in the last round. Only Mel and I had picked up the "large" show programmes, but it was Mel's podiums that she'd won from previous well-attended shows that eventually gave her the extra couple of spectators needed to overtake my score. Mark and Rich got in a bidding war for lions, which seemed to hurt Rich more than it did Mark! This is a fun game, but you need to start planning from the very first deal to stand a chance at the end!

Pirate's Cove

Meanwhile, the Ticket to Ride gang were on their second Days of Wonder game of the night (and the third overall!):

David:    37
Mark L:    32
Sue:    32
Faye:    23

I know very little about this one, apart from the scores shown above. It was a first game for both David and Faye, so David's win looks pretty impressive. There was no fight to the death between Sue and mark to determine second place, so it is awarded jointly!

6 Takes!

We were now down to seven players, and rather than split up again, we decided to stay in one big group and end the night with a couple of card games:

Nick:    (1 + 21 + 0)    22
Rich:    (19 + 12 + 4)    35
David:    (10 + 17 + 9)    36
Mark L:    (2 + 7 + 27)    36
Faye:    (12 + 22 + 11)    45
Neil:    (28 + 15 + 15)    58
Sue:    (35 + 10 + 24)    69

This was chaotic fun, as always, with Sue trying her best to end the game as fast as possible by picking up as many rows as she could. Mark was the one to catch throughout the game, but suffered in the third round, while I got incredibly lucky and avoided picking up a single row of cards, to give me a nice win!

Saboteur

And finally ..... The Shire Gamers traditional end-of-nighter .... Four rounds of Saboteur:

Mark L:    9
Rich:    6
Sue:    6
Nick:    6
Neil:    5
David:    3
Faye:    3

We never get tired of this one, as we all get busy accusing each other of playing for the other team! Neil and I made the mistake of winning the first two rounds, and then watched our equipment take regular beatings as the others got their revenge. Mark was a victorious saboteur in the first round, then did the smart thing by losing the second, before running away with it in the last two rounds!

And that was the end of another fun Monday night. Thanks to all who came along!
