How to find Shire Games

Thursday 26th October 2006

Half term kept a few people away this week, and the numbers dropped back down to a sensible 11 players. I am not taking the fact that the most we've ever had was the week I wasn't here personally. Not at all.

Players:

Andrew, Darren, Dave F, David S, Gordon, Jackie, Jonathan, Nick, Rachel, Rebecca, Sue

Games Played:

Yspahan

The first four in (almost) were quick to start one of the new arrivals from Essen.

Dave F:    71
Gordon:    57
Andrew:    52
Nick:    49

I don't know. Bring them all a shiny new game, teach them all how to play it, and they beat you into last place! A good win for Dave, who made good use of his camels, while I took far too long to get any at all!

On the Underground (1)

The next four to arrive grabbed this new track-laying and passenger-moving game, and took it for a ride:

Darren:    56
Rebecca:    55
Rachel:    53
Jonathan:    38

Don't know much about this one, although I heard it involved a re-start, as players were scoring points for every single piece of track the passenger used, creating some massive scores!

Ra

The remaining three players were off to Egypt for some bidding and bluffing ...

David:    51 (highest Sun)
Jackie:    51
Sue:    34

Sue became the next victim of the "teach it and lose" virus that was going round tonight, as David and Jackie fought a very tight contest.

Gheos

Another new release, and this time it was the first game for everyone, as we broke the shrink-wrap on a brand new box.

Nick:    71
Sue:    66
Gordon:    46
Dave:    43

I seemed to get off to a very lucky start in this one, with the Epoch tiles appearing pretty early and timed perfectly in my favour, however Sue managed to run me very close at the end, and I would have been in deep trouble if I hadn't grabbed a load of points as I ended the game by playing the last scoring token.

Caylus

A spontaneous game of Caylus broke out upstairs between Andrew, David and Jackie, but had to be abandoned as it turned out that David was using his influence with the King rather more than was intended!

Wings of War

So instead, the upstairs crowd took to the skies ....

Jonathan:    1st
Rachel:    2nd
Darren:    3rd
Rebecca:    4th

I know nothing of this one, including how it is scored, but I'm guessing that Jonathan was the only guy with his plane intact at the end of the game!

On the Underground (2)

And now the downstairs crew had a chance to go travelling round the London Underground.

Nick:    66
Dave:    62
Sue:    50

This was a fun game of this one, with a pretty tight battle going on until the last few cards come out, when Sue's lines started to be overrun. Dave had one final chance to catch up the 10 points that he was behind me, but was forced to use Sue's line for the last trip, only earning 6 points for himself.

Ra (2)

And to end the night, Ra was invoked upstairs one last time ...

Rebecca:    41
Rachel:    29
Darren:    26
Jonathan:    26 (lowest Sun)

A comfortable-looking win for Rebecca in this one, with the other three fighting over second place!

And that was it for another week.

Oddly, now that I think back on the night, I have a feeling I have some of the above games in the wrong order, but then ... no-one actually reads this anyway, so I can get away with it!

Thanks all for coming out once again, as the evenings start to get a little chillier in the shop.
