How to find Shire Games

Thursday 13th April 2006

Despite the holiday weekend, we kept up our run of decent turnouts with another 10 players this week.

Players:

James, Jon, Kev, Mark L, Mitch, Nick, Philippa, Sam, Sue, Susan

Games Played:

M

We had a bunch of early arrivals, and so they sat down for a quick game of this excellent abstract game ...

(chips + tiles - penalties)

Mitch:    (60 + 270 - 0) = 330
Mark:    (50 + 190 - 0) = 240
Susan:    (50 + 190 - 10) = 230
James:    (50 + 200 - 20) = 230
Philippa:    (40 + 190 - 30) = 200
Jon:    (110 + 160 - 70) = 200

A pretty close game for the places, but Mitch romped this one by the look of it.

Manhattan

As Kev and Sam arrived before M was finished, the three of us quickly nipped upstairs for a game of Manhattan. This included the "Godzilla" variant, represented by a Star Wars Storm Trooper miniature.

Sam:    70
Nick:    54
Kev:    41

This is a much tougher game with the Godzilla variant! The game became a bit of a contest between the two tallest Skyscrapers, although one was eventually destroyed by the monster! Sam absolutely wiped the floor with the pair of us.

King Me!

In a masterly piece of bad timing, M finished well before Manhattan did, and so the M players broke out this quickie to fill in. Actually, it wasn't quite all the M players, as Mitch nipped out for two minutes, and the game started without him!

Philippa:    (30 + 18 + 10) = 58
James:    (21 + 17 + 18) = 56
Jon:    (16 + 21 + 14) = 51
Mark:    (23 + 4 + 19) = 46
Susan:    (18 + 7 + 7) = 32

I don't know much about this one, although I did see some of the final round. James and Susan were both going for the "kill everyone" bonus in the final round, but didn't manage to save enough "no" cards to pull it off.

Shadows over Camelot

The ten of us now split into two groups of five, and this was the choice for the "upstairs" game, on the comfy chairs (suitably, given all the other Monty Python references floating around).

Sam:    Victory as the Traitor (12 siege engines)
Kev:
Mitch:
Nick:
Sue:    All lost

This was a great game. The good guys lost, as we were at 11 siege engines when it became Sam's turn, and he was an - as yet - undiscovered traitor. The swords on the table were currently at 6-4 to the whites, so we were just looking round for another quest to grab a quick victory in. I guess we should have figured Sam for the traitor, as he spent quite a while dumping cards at Excalibur, which I even mentioned would be a good place for the traitor to be!

Hacienda

The remaining five players went to Argentina to slaughter some sheep at the market.

(Half time score)

Mark:    (46)    131
Susan:    (35)    121
Jon:    (38)    115
James:    (35)    112
Philippa:    (37)    107

Yet another win for Mark at Hacienda! The rumour is he's only lost once. A good second place for Susan, who was the only one playing for the first time.

Bang!

Four players had to go home, which left us with just 6 for a last game. A trip to the Wild West was called for ...

Sue (Sheriff):    Still Alive
Susan (Deputy):    Still Alive
Nick (Renegade):    Died last
Mitch (Outlaw):    Died 3rd
Sam (Outlaw):    Died 2nd
Kev (Outlaw):    First to Die

This was a fairly comfortable win for the good guys. The Sheriff was a little fortunate in the seating positions, as she had the Deputy on one side and the Renegade on the other, making her a difficult target for the three guys trying to kill her! Sue even managed to survive the dynamite exploding in her hands!

And that took us a little past midnight. Luckily, the next day was a bank holiday! Thanks to all for coming out.
