How to find Shire Games

Thursday 5th January 2006

And so to our first Thursday of the new year, and almost everyone was sick! We still managed to get a pretty good turn out though, despite the number of absentees. At least they all had notes from their Mums ....

Players:

Gordon, James, Jon, Mark, Nathan, Nick, Philippa, Sam, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Vegas Showdown

We were pretty quickly up to five people, and decided that the best chance of us playing this game was to start immediately before a sixth player turned up and fiddled with the numbers!

Gordon:    56
Sue:    52
Mark:    47
Sam:    45
Nick:    42

This was a fun game, which we all liked quite a lot. I never seemed to recover from the round where advertising was banned, and I was bullied out of all the other affordable items. Gordon, on the other hand, seemed to manage to do exactly the right thing just before I flipped the card that rewarded him for doing it! A masterful bit of timing and casino building!

Mystery of the Abbey

While we were all building our dens of iniquity in Las Vegas downstairs, the other five players upstairs were wandering around the monastery (trying to balance out our sins!)

Philippa:    4
Tim:    2
Jon:    0
James:    0
Nathan:    0

I don't know much about this one, but Philippa proved to be the smartest of the group, finding the culprit before anyone else.

China

In an effort to find something quick to play downstairs while we were waiting for the guys upstairs to finish, we nipped off to China for a quick game ...

Gordon:    36
Mark:    32
Nick:    31
Sue:    30
Sam:    28

Another win for Gordon, as he placed a whole bunch of houses and created a long enough road to stay in front of the pack. I was the only roadless player, but I tried my hardest to catch up with the Emissaries, but ultimately fell a few points short.

Antike

The game upstairs finally finished, but everyone went home, leaving the five of us to round off the evening with a game of five-player Antike, again playing the English side of the board.

Sam:    8
Mark:    6
Nick:    6
Sue:    3
Gordon:    3

In our only previous playing of this game, Sam got hammered from all sides, but he got his revenge tonight! He was the only one amongst us to get up to 6 temples, and eventually took the game by progressing onto the second level of the progress card to claim a Philosopher. Mark looked strong in the beginning, but started looking like he was about to pick a fight with the wrong man (Gordon), who turned him away by amassing a pretty impressive red army!

And that brought us to 11.30 and time to go home and have supper. Thanks to everyone for coming out again.
