How to find Shire Games

Thursday 3rd November 2005

Another fun and interesting night of games at the shop ... I tried to make an effort to steer away form some of the heavier stuff with the games library tonight, as we'd been attacking some of the deeper games recently and our brains needed a rest!

Players:

Anthony, Brian, Cat, Jon, Kev, Mark, Mitch, Nathan, Nick, Sam, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Blokus

While waiting for people to arrive, Sue and Nick had a quick game of Blokus.

Nick:    20 - 20 = 0
Sue:    15 - 29 = -14

This was the first time we'd ever seen two colours get all of their pieces onto the board!

Ticket to Ride

Mitch and Brian arrived, and so we decided to get straight on with a game of the original Ticket to Ride before the masses appeared.

Nick:    112
Sue:    103
Brian:    101
Mitch:    98

A pretty tight game, which everyone thought everyone else was winning. Nick took it thanks to a Vancouver/Montreal connection, but only just managed to complete an 8-point ticket before the game's end, otherwise Nick would have been dead last!

Lord of the Rings: Children's Version

Tim and Nathan arrived during the game of Ticket to Ride, and killed a little time with this one. No idea of the scores, but ...

Nathan
beat
Tim

Pete the Pirate

Another children's game hit the tables upstairs as four adults who should know better (Anthony, Cat, Kev and Sam) decided this would be a fun game to kill 15 minutes or so while the other games all synchronized themselves.

Cat:    5
Kev:     3
Sam:    2
Anthony:    0

(These scores are pretty approximate!)

Hoity Toity

We finally got ten people all free at the same time (with two others on their way), and so we decided on a six player game of Hoity Toity downstairs, while Blokus made an appearance upstairs before the last pair arrived, when Cloud 9 became the game for six.

(scores are number of spaces into/short of the Dining Room)

Kev:    +3
Jon:    +1
Sam:    -2
Sue:    -4
Mitch:    -5
Nick:    -7

A good game of bluff and double-bluff, and Kev ultimately reaped the rewards for being the only guy in the Castle on one turn, immediately followed by being the only guy in the Auction Hall on the next turn!

Blokus

The Blokus game upstairs between Tim, Nathan, Anthony, Cat and Brian is a mystery (and a bit puzzling as it only plays 4) ... any info would be appreciated.

Cloud 9

Once they became six people, a game of Cloud 9 ensued.

Mark:    58
Tim:    57
Cat:    54
Anthony:    52
Nathan:    46
Brian:    38

Once again, these scores are approximate, as they weren't marked down before the board was swept clean!

At this point Anthony, Brian, Nathan and Tim had to leave us, which dropped the numbers to eight. Tikal and Ra were the choices...

Ra

A four-player game of Ra with Kev the only person who hadn't played the game before.

Kev:    48
Jon:    44
Sue:    38
Nick:    34

Another win for Kev, who was having a good night! He managed to get a pretty nice collection of Monuments and the 16 points he gained there (plus taking the Sun bonus while Jon lost it) gave him a well-earned victory.
Meanwhile I get steadily worse at this game, having come dead last twice in a row now! (and it will keep getting played at Shire Gamers until I improve!!)

Tikal

Upstairs, a four-player game of Tikal was in full swing ...

Sam:    72
Mitch:    58
Cat:    48
Mark:    35

I have a feeling this game didn't get all the way to the final scoring. Or if it did, Mark is even worse at this game than he claims to be!

And that was it. Time to go home.

Thanks to everyone for joining us.
